Candid Galleries presents Contexture an exhibition of textile, stitch, drawing and painting. Part of the Network A.D. programme, the exhibition makes exhibiting in the public realm an affordable possibility for Graduate Artists and Designers. In its turn, the wider public is able to see and purchase the latest work of tomorrow's established artists in one of London's largest contemporary art spaces.

The artists represented seek to sharpen the impact of their narrative by the original and imaginative interplay of subject and context in their work using a variety of media.

Kate Stewart fuses narrative painting techniques with traditional embroidery craft. Her scenes represent, amongst other things, modern female experience and well known figures from public life in uncharacteristic and uncomfortable situations. The medium of embroidery, associated traditionally with cosiness and homeliness as well the once subservient and restricted role of women in society is co-opted as the vehicle for Kate's unsettling dramas. She succeeds in creating witty, thought-provoking and subversive images. Kate's work has won the Kirklees Council Design Award and was shortlisted for Saints 2002 Design Book.

The line drawings of David Rodrigues are stitched on to fabric rather than marked on to paper. The stitch literally holds everything together, serving both to form the image and shift the line into an unfamiliar three-dimensional context. It is the very ordinariness and simplicity of a stitched line that gives his drawings their impact.

The textile sculptures of popular culture characters by Peter Crush are initially amusing, then on closer inspection touched by pathos and irony. In this series of work he takes the domestic and manipulates it to reflect upon contemporary issues… Noddy and Mickey older and more human than the originals, embodying the experience of aging.

About the exhibitions:

Network A.D. Exhibitions are mounted approximately every six weeks in the galleries and are by selection only. The exhibitions are orginised with a view to sales, but work from all disciplines is considered and explorative work is encouraged. The galleries provide an ideal venue for large pieces, as well as installation and provide a professional backdrop for the work exhibited. We are happy to work with artists with regard to specific requests in exhibiting specialist work.

The exhibitions are marketed individually and have an independent identity according to the type of work selected. 5000 flyers are printed for each exhibition and distributed to our extensive mailing lists which include relevant London galleries, collectors, journalists and as well as regular visitors to the gallery. Flyers are also distributed to relevant venues via a distribution company and posters printed to advertise the exhibition locally. Press releases are produced for major press in London, as well as more local publications. Each exhibition has a private view for which exhibitors are provided with invitations.

Candid Arts Trust is a self-financing charity that exists solely for the support and promotion of graduate artists. Based at Angel, Islington, Candid offers facilities such as studio and exhibition space for the widest possible range of contemporary artists.
