Rhian Jarman

My work concerning the human body began with a series of work entitled 'Laundered Bodies' which explored issues of breast cancer from personal, social and political aspects. My recent work has been less concerned with breast cancer itself, generally exploring the constant change and fluctuation of the female body using notions of fragility and bodily degeneration. It confronts the fears that preoccupy us as human beings, exploring themes of intimacy and distance, interior and exterior, and the body's objectivity and vulnerability.

A series of work I am currently concentrating on involves the painting and printing of my own body, bringing an element of performance into my work. I make impressions of various body parts and develop these into silkscreen and finally copper etchings. The final prints emulate x-rays, which scrutinize the interior body. Ironically it is the body's exterior that fundamentally concerns society at present.
